Certifications and Alliances

Through national and international certifications that we have obtained at SQM Iodine Plant Nutrition, we guarantee that our production is sustainable, which allows us to maintain our leadership and continue to be recognized worldwide. In addition, we have alliances with the main organizations to comply as well with current regulations and to ensure the good quality of our products, our production process, the care of people and the protection of the environment.

Responsible Care

In 2022 Plant Nueva Victoria was recertified for a period of three years. At present, we are moving forward to initiate the certification process for Puerto de Tocopilla. In Chile, the implementation of this initiative is leaded by ASIQUIM. Our commitment is to comply with 6 basic principles for Responsible Care: continuous improvement in environmental, health and safety matters; efficient use of resources; listening, integrating and working with nearby communities; and providing assistance to encourage responsible management of chemicals. In addition, re-certify our processes every 3 years.

EcoVadis

We are part of the 600 multinational companies that work with EcoVadis with the purpose of contributing to Sustainability, managing risks, reducing costs and boosting innovation in our processes. EcoVadis is a sustainability ratings provider, with methodology based on international standards. These include the UN Global Compact Initiative and the ISO 26000 standard. Through this certification, we are committed to contribute in order to have an improved sustainability performance using 21 indicators in four areas: environment; labor practices and human rights; ethics; and sustainable procurement.

ISO 14001

The international standard ISO 14001 was born as a response to global concern for the environment and the proliferation of regional environmental regulations. It is in this context that the need for a universal indicator arises, in order to evaluate the efforts of organizations to achieve reliable and adequate environmental protection. Through this standard we seek to manage and identify the environmental risks of our industry, considering risk prevention as environmental protection, following the legal regulations and the socioeconomic needs required for compliance.

NCh 3262, Gender Equality

NCh 3262 (2012) standard on Gender Equality and Work-Life Balance is a voluntary standard that can be implemented in any organization. In order to incorporate gender perspective in companies that require it, the UN Development Program (UNDP) recommended all countries to generate certification programs for their gender equity management systems. Through this standard we are committed to generate procedures and practices of organizational management, with the purpose of transform people management and organizational development to ensure a greater degree of equality.

Dow Jones Sustainability Index

The Dow Jones Sustainability Index (or "DJSI") is a set of several sustainability indexes that integrate companies listed on the New York Stock Exchange with high performance in different areas such as the economy, social issues and the environment. In 2020, the S&P Dow Jones Index qualified SQM in both the DJSI Chile Index and the DJSI MILA Pacific Alliance Index, which represents a great achievement for the company. This is a reflection of our work, which focuses at encouraging sustainability through the annual publication of our Sustainability Report, which is carried out under GRI principles and is also verified externally. We are committed to integrate and enhance sustainability as part of our development strategy. This commitment translates into challenging our operational practices to reduce the impact on our environment, meaningful dialogue and building respectful and close relationships with neighboring communities, and achieving a high standard of transparency in everything we do.

CDP – Carbon Disclosure Project

CDP is a non-profit organization that leads the global disclosure system for investors, companies, cities, states and regions to manage their impact on the environment. CDP is internationally recognized as one of the most comprehensive environmental reports on corporate and urban action on matters of sustainability. Through this certification we are committed to identify and address any increasing risks and to find new opportunities for action, in order to contribute for a sustainable industry.

Huella Chile’s

The main objective of Huella Chile is to encourage Greenhouse Gas Emissions management in public and private organizations to mitigate the country’s total GHG emissions. This initiative was created by the Chilean Ministry of the Environment and is supported and financed by the European Commission, the Government of Germany and the Government of Australia. This program provides recognition to participating organizations, ranging from carbon footprint quantifications to a declaration of excellence. We are committed to encourage and boost calculating, reporting and managing greenhouse gases (GHG) through various initiatives.

ECOPORTS

ECOPORTS It is the leading environmental initiative for the European port sector. As such, it offers a range of environmental management tools based on EcoPorts’ PERS guidelines, which is a global standard that has voluntary commitments that go beyond normal regulatory requirements. Our commitment is to identify environmental risks and compare our scores with the European average scores, in order to receive expert advice and personalized recommendations from ECOPORTS

Giro Limpio

It is a voluntary national program, administered by the Energy Sustainability Agency, which seeks to certify and recognize the efforts made by freight transportation companies, in matters of sustainability and energy efficiency. In addition, the Giro Limpio program certifies cargo-generation companies that prefer Giro Limpio-certified carriers, thus helping to reduce energy consumption and Greenhouse Gas emissions (GHG) and other local pollutants that might affect people’s health, reducing the environmental impact of the many value chains in Chile.

27001 CERTIFICATION

ISO 27001:2013 is an international standard that provides a framework for Information Security Management Systems (ISMS) to ensure confidentiality, integrity and continued availability of information, as well as legal compliance. The ISO 27001 certification is essential to protect SQM’s most important assets, in addition to customer and employee information, corporate image and other private and critical business information. The ISO standard includes an approach based on launching, implementing, operating and maintaining a management system.

TISAX

TISAX® is a common assessment and exchange procedure for the automotive sector. It is based on a survey called ISA (Information Security Assessment), which was developed by the “Information Security” team of the VDA, which in turn is based on key aspects of the ISO/IEC 27001 international standard and has been extended to include a maturity model. In addition, the responsible bodies of the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) have created the conditions for establishing a joint evaluation, as well as an exchange mechanism under the name TISAX® (Trusted Information Security Assessment eXchange). TISAX® is a registered trademark of the ENX Association. SQM is part of the lithium battery industry, so TISAX® is one of the required certifications that our most important customers need.


Partnerships

Together with various entities, we are committed to integrate the concept of sustainability into our corporate strategy, through the implementation of a variety of actions in social matters, human rights, governance and environmental areas. United Nations Global Compact

The United Nations Global Compact seeks for companies to implement concrete actions in Sustainability. We are part of the Global Compact, which means that we commit to its 10 principles. In addition, we comply with the UN 2030 agenda and its Sustainability Goals (SDGs).

Acción Empresas

Accion Empresas is an organization that brings together more than 130 companies determined to manage their businesses in a sustainable manner, following a logic of competitiveness and sustainability. It seeks to build a more inclusive and egalitarian society. In Chile, they represent the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).

ASIQUIM

The Chilean Chemistry Industry Trade Association got 120 companies belonging to the industrial chemical sector together. In Chile, ASIQUIM implements Responsible Care, a global initiative to encourage the sustainable development of the chemical industry. In Antofagasta, we are also part of the Board of Directors of the Northern Zone Commission of ASIQUIM.

International Fertilizer Industry Association (IFA)

The International Fertilizer Association (IFA) represents between 75-80% of the global fertilizer production, including manufacturers, sales and distribution.
