Activa Fest 2023

More than 70 entrepreneurs from Iquique and El Tamarugal gathered at Arturo Prat University, located in Iquique, in order to celebrate National Entrepreneurship Day with the first version of Activa Fest. This was organized by SQM Iodine Plant Nutrition, Seremi of Economy Development and Tourism, the Municipality of Iquique and UNAP. This fair sought to promote regional entrepreneurial development through a large commercial showcase. 

Achievements:

  • Collaboration agreement between SQM Iodine Plant Nutrition and several universities, including UTA, UNAP, Santo Tomas and INACAP, with the purpose to strengthen the innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem in the region.
  • Exhibitions, workshops, lectures and children’s shows were carried out to strengthen entrepreneurial skills, positioning the fair as a platform of visibility and value for regional entrepreneurship.
  • Empowering entrepreneurs through networks, customers and investors.

Agronomic Congress of Chile

The 72nd Agronomic Congress of Chile, which was organized by Universidad Arturo Prat (UNAP) and the Agronomic Society of Chile with the support of the Tarapaca Ministry of Agriculture and sponsored by our company, was held in Iquique.

Achievements:

  • Participation of 40 producers and entrepreneurs, 90 exhibitors, 107 presentations and more than 1,000 people from the region. 
  • Exhibitions and master lectures, addressing topics such as research on iodine as a new agricultural nutrient and prospects for agriculture in sustainability, food security and production.
  • Promotion of an Agricultural Market for families in Iquique, exhibiting products such as melons from Bajo Soga, alpaca wool blankets from Colchane and honey from La Huayca.
  • Workshops on earthworm breeding and composting, preparation of healthy snacks, and exhibitions with farmers and entrepreneurs from El Tamarugal, as well as live cooking demonstrations.
  • Visits to the Alfalfa Production Center, the Center for Agricultural and Livestock Research and Development in La Tirana, and the Canchones Experimental Center of UNAP.

2° Meeting of Innovation and Agriculture

In La Tirana, we held the Second Meeting of Innovation and Agricultural Entrepreneurship of the Tarapaca Region, led by SQM Iodine Plant Nutrition in collaboration with the municipality of Pozo Almonte and the Seremi of Agriculture.

Achievement:

  • More than 200 people from various communities in the region participated in this meeting.
  • Topics such as blueberry production in the desert, composting, circular economy in agriculture, and the innovative role of iodine as an agricultural nutrient were addressed. 
  • Leading national exhibitors shared their knowledge at the event, which also included a farmers’ fair with local products and guided tours of La Tirana Research and Innovation Center.

Hydroponic Production Center for the Iquique Penitentiary Compliance Center (CCP)

We signed an agreement with the Chilean Gendarmerie to provide a 240 m2 hydroponic production greenhouse for the Iquique Penitentiary Compliance Center, which is necessary for the social reintegration of the people under custody. It is worth mentioning that the penitentiary center currently houses around 250 women.

Achievements:

  • Structural design of the unit, land clearing and leveling, and construction of the cultivation system to be installed. 
  • Implementation of a salt abatement system and improvement of water quality through filters, which will reduce the concentration of elements that are harmful to the crops. 
  • Training in the use of hydroponic cultivation systems and techniques.
  • The greenhouse capacity is of 10 meters wide by 24 meters long and was inaugurated during the second half of 2023.

Seminar “Challenges and Advances in Sustainability”

This 2023, at the Gavina Hotel in Iquique, SQM Iodine Plant Nutrition and the Industrial Association of Iquique and El Tamarugal, organized jointly the seminar “Challenges and Advances in Sustainability”. The seminar was attended by Gonzalo Muñoz Abogabir, who is the first COP High Level Climate Action Champion and leader of Race to Zero, and gave a master lecture on issues related to climate change and the importance of encouraging sustainable policies in the private sector. 

Blue Dragons

 On the grass of Tierra de Campeones Ramon Estay Saavedra Stadium, the CDI Women’s Team launched the official jersey for the 2023 season, where we joined as an official sponsor, also contributing to improve the physical training facilities that have various women’s categories of the club, in the CBR sports complex located in Alto Los Verdes, Iquique. 

Achievements:

  • Donation of 9 tons of fertilizers to Deportes Iquique, a contribution made in order for the Iquique sports club to maintain the grass on their fields in excellent conditions, in Tierra de Campeones Stadium and CBR complex.

“Mas Proveedoras +Mujer” Program

To strengthen the management of companies led by women or with more than a 50% of them and in collaboration with the Industrial Association of Iquique and El Tamural, we implemented a training  process in different skills and topics such as gender focus, linkage related activities with the regional ecosystem, development plans and reactivation of entrepreneurial activities.

Achievements:

  • 15 women entrepreneurs and businesswomen from Tarapaca obtained a certificate that accredited them as graduates of the “Mas Proveedoras +Mujer” program.

“Together for a safer historical area in Iquique” Program

We promoted this project jointly with the Regional Federation of Community Unions of Tarapaca, carried out by Factor de Cambio Foundation and with the support of the Regional Government.

Achievements:

  • Nearly 500 security cameras were given to various neighborhood councils in the historical area of downtown Iquique. 
  • The cameras were installed at 13 corners in each sector, where they can record the movements of 4 different main streets, and provide evidence when a crime is being committed, in order to assist with police investigations.
  • This project will benefit an estimate of 7,875 people, including other public entities and businesses located in this area.
